How to Make Reading a Part of Your Daily Life

by Emre Akbas 16 Feb 2022 1 comment

Are you someone who really wants to read more books? Perhaps to learn a new skill, or just enjoy an engaging story – whatever it is that you wish to do with your spare time. However, despite your best intentions, reading seems to take a back seat each night when you finally get home from work. If this sounds like you then the quick tips below are designed with one objective…to help you make reading a part of your daily life.

#1 Do not make it seem like it is a mission or a goal

Wanting to read is something that comes from within. If you have the mindset of feeling like you are forced to read, two things will happen: you losing interest in the book and not understanding anything that you read. So what I really mean by this point is to not to give yourself tasks like "I will read 10 pages tonight." Don't do that. Instead, pick up the book when you feel like you want to take some time for yourself.

#2 Find what you love to read about

You may not like every genre of book out there, so find what you do like. Maybe it's historical fiction or fantasy novels and science fiction. Maybe it's memoirs or essays (we're all biased here). Or maybe it's something else entirely! Figure out what genre of books speaks to you and stick with it (for now). Even if the first few books you choose aren't great, keep going! There are so many genres out there that there's bound to be one that fits your interests and needs.

#3 Make time to read

Carve out some time every day to sit down and read — like with any other habit, consistency is key to making it stick. Try setting aside time before bed or in the morning after breakfast.

Don't put too much pressure on yourself. Most books don't need to be read cover-to-cover as quickly as possible (though there's nothing wrong with flying through your favorite genre fiction if that's what you enjoy).

#4 Keep books on hand

If you're always on the go, keep a book in your bag or car so that you always have something to read when you're stuck waiting for an appointment or on a commute.

#5 Read in short bursts if that's easier for you

Please, please, please do not try to finish a 300 page book in 2 hours. It is so meaningless. Don't feel like you have to read an entire chapter at once. Break up your reading into small chunks that are easier for you to focus on. For example, try reading 10 pages every morning with your coffee or read 3-5 pages before.

Reading is a challenging activity, especially when an individual’s schedule is jam-packed with other activities. But it can be done! By using magazines, the library, ebooks, and a host of other resources, you can make reading a part of your daily life. It’s certainly not impossible to read for twenty minutes each day; it just takes some planning and dedication. Reading is one of the most important skills you can ever hope to master, regardless of your age. The good news is this: you can make reading a daily habit in two easy steps.
